    Development of Algorithms for Estimating Apartment Rents in Metropolitan Area Based on a Combined Micro-Macro Approach

    Information about the rental costs of the large apartment buildings is asymmetric in that thereal estate companies tend to disclose such information to a customer only for the large apartmentbuildings of potential interest to the customer, and any information irrelevant to the ongoing businesswould be sealed. This information imbalance prevents the market to be transparent, and theeconomic market principles are often ignored. In order to overcome this pitfall, this paper aims atdeveloping a numerical algorithm for estimating the unit rent of a large apartment building based ona set of real data in the metropolitan Tokyo. The algorithm is based on the combined micro-macroapproach, where the local information such as the nearest rail station, the distance to it, and the likewould be used first to estimate the unit rent through the micro approach. For the macro approach,the linear regression is employed based on the real data, and the resulting estimation formula wouldyield the second estimate. The two estimates would then be linearly combined, where the optimalweighting factor would be determined so as to minimize the discrepancy between the combinedestimated values and the unit rents obtained from the real data

    Expression of protein kinase C subspecies in human leukemia- lymphoma cell lines

    AbstractExpression of protein kinase C (PKC) subspecies was studied in various human leukemia-lymphoma cell lines. The PKC in most cell lines examined was resolved into two major fractions corresponding to type II (β-sequence) and type III (α-sequence) PKC of the rat brain. The amounts of these two subspecies greatly varied among the cell lines. Type I PKC (γ-sequence) was expressed in none of the cell lines tested, but PKCs with undefined structures were frequently detected. The differential co-expression of several PKC subspecies is presumably related to the state of cell differentiation

    Effect of CNT exposure on alveolar macrophages

    Background Nanomaterials are widely used in various fields. Although the toxicity of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in pulmonary tissues has been demonstrated, the toxicological effect of CNTs on the immune system in the lung remains unclear. Methods and finding In this study, exposure to Taquann-treated multi-walled CNTs (T-CNTs) was performed using aerosols generated in an inhalation chamber. At 12 months after T-CNT exposure, alveolar inflammation with macrophage accumulation and hypertrophy of the alveolar walls were observed. In addition, fibrotic lesions were enhanced by T-CNT exposure. The macrophages in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of T-CNT-exposed mice were not largely shifted to any particular population, and were a mixed phenotype with M1 and M2 polarization. Moreover, the alveolar macrophages of T-CNT-exposed mice produced matrix metalloprotinase-12. Conclusions These results suggest that T-CNT exposure promoted chronic inflammation and fibrotic lesion formation in profibrotic macrophages for prolonged periods

    Correlation between musculoskeletal structure of the hand and primate locomotion: Morphometric and mechanical analysis in prehension using the cross- and triple-ratios

    Biometric ratios of the relative length of the rays in the hand have been analyzed between primate species in the light of their hand function or phylogeny. However, how relative lengths among phalanges are mechanically linked to the grasping function of primates with different locomotor behaviors remains unclear. To clarify this, we calculated cross and triple-ratios, which are related to the torque distribution, and the torque generation mode at different joint angles using the lengths of the phalanges and metacarpal bones in 52 primates belonging to 25 species. The torque exerted on the finger joint and traction force of the flexor tendons necessary for a cylindrical grip and a suspensory hand posture were calculated using the moment arm of flexor tendons measured on magnetic resonance images, and were compared among\ua0Hylobates\ua0spp.,\ua0Ateles\ua0sp., and\ua0Papio hamadryas. Finally, the torques calculated from the model were validated by a mechanical study detecting the force exerted on the phalanx by pulling the digital flexor muscles during suspension in these three species. Canonical discriminant analysis of cross and triple-ratios classified primates almost in accordance with their current classification based on locomotor behavior. The traction force was markedly reduced with flexion of the MCP joint parallel to the torque in brachiating primates; this was notably lower in the terrestrial quadrupedal primates than in the arboreal primates at mild flexion. Our mechanical study supported these features in the torque and traction force generation efficiencies. Our results suggest that suspensory or terrestrial quadrupedal primates have hand structures that can exert more torque at a suspensory posture, or palmigrade and digitigrade locomotion, respectively. Furthermore, our study suggests availability of the cross and triple-ratios as one of the indicators to estimate the hand function from the skeletal structure

In this review, the progress on studies of antitumor peptides from marine sources is provided. The biological properties and mechanisms of action of different marine peptides are described; information about their molecular diversity is also presented. Novel peptides that induce apoptosis signal pathway, affect the tubulin-microtubule equilibrium and inhibit angiogenesis are presented in association with their pharmacological properties. It is intended to provide useful information for further research in the fields of marine antitumor peptides

    Hyperoxemia and excess oxygen use in early acute respiratory distress syndrome : Insights from the LUNG SAFE study

We examined this issue in patients with ARDS enrolled in the Large observational study to UNderstand the Global impact of Severe Acute respiratory FailurE (LUNG SAFE) study. Methods: In this secondary analysis of the LUNG SAFE study, we wished to determine the prevalence and the outcomes associated with hyperoxemia on day 1, sustained hyperoxemia, and excessive oxygen use in patients with early ARDS. Patients who fulfilled criteria of ARDS on day 1 and day 2 of acute hypoxemic respiratory failure were categorized based on the presence of hyperoxemia (PaO2 > 100 mmHg) on day 1, sustained (i.e., present on day 1 and day 2) hyperoxemia, or excessive oxygen use (FIO2 ≥ 0.60 during hyperoxemia). Results: Of 2005 patients that met the inclusion criteria, 131 (6.5%) were hypoxemic (PaO2 < 55 mmHg), 607 (30%) had hyperoxemia on day 1, and 250 (12%) had sustained hyperoxemia. Excess FIO2 use occurred in 400 (66%) out of 607 patients with hyperoxemia. Excess FIO2 use decreased from day 1 to day 2 of ARDS, with most hyperoxemic patients on day 2 receiving relatively low FIO2. Multivariate analyses found no independent relationship between day 1 hyperoxemia, sustained hyperoxemia, or excess FIO2 use and adverse clinical outcomes. Mortality was 42% in patients with excess FIO2 use, compared to 39% in a propensity-matched sample of normoxemic (PaO2 55-100 mmHg) patients (P = 0.47). Conclusions: Hyperoxemia and excess oxygen use are both prevalent in early ARDS but are most often non-sustained. No relationship was found between hyperoxemia or excessive oxygen use and patient outcome in this cohort.     The potential of the Internet has been expanded substantially by a new generationof mobile devices, opening the door for rapid growth of m-commerce.While the traditional PC access to the Internet continues to be vital forexploiting the advantages of the Internet, the mobile access appears to attractmore people because of flexible accesses to the Internet in a ubiquitousmanner. Accordingly, e-commerce is now in the process of being convertedinto m-commerce. The purpose of this paper is to develop and analyze amathematical model for comparing e-commerce via the traditional PC accessonly with m-commerce which accommodates both the traditional PCaccess and the mobile access. The distribution of the number of productspurchased by time t and the distribution of the time required for selling Kproducts are derived explicitly, enabling one to assess the impact of mobiledevices on e-businesses. Numerical examples are given for illustrating behavioraldifferences between m-commerce consumers and traditional e-commerceconsumers
